Cooperative Occupational Training (Co-op) is an integral part of the total secondary school program, which recognizes the value of supervised work as a learning experience. It is called Cooperative Education because an employer and a school join together for a business educational partnership.
The cooperative plan to prepare students for employment is an organizational pattern in which regularly scheduled part-time (usually half-days) on-the-job employment is coordinated with the job-related classroom instruction by a qualified instructor. The student is given the opportunity to practice and learn in the classroom while developing worker competencies through training on the job.
Instruction is given in school, which is directly supplemental to the job and is correlated closely with the kind and sequence of job experiences. All of this activity is directed toward preparing students to work in their chosen career. Cooperative occupational training is vocational education with the on-the-job phase acting as a laboratory for the in-school instructional program.
These laboratories (training stations) are the various trade, industrial, business, and pre-professional establishments in the community. By working part of the school day, under a planned program with competent supervision, the student may learn practical skills and knowledge, which will contribute materially to their growth and development as an effective citizen. The co-op training program shall be considered a subject in the high school curriculum. Two credits and a letter grade shall be given to all students who have satisfactorily completed a term of the Co-op Training Program which must include a minimum of 10 hours per week average. The student must complete the entire term to qualify for credit. The program enables youth to move into their next role in life whether it is to enter college, vocational school, military, or to enter directly into employment.
The primary purpose of cooperative occupational training is the development of occupational competence. However, students will also benefit from other values such as personality development or the earning of money to remain in school.
Every program must contain experience on the job in an actual training station chosen for its ability to provide a planned variety of experiences under close supervision.
While the concept of a well-rounded education has not changed, the offerings and opportunities for today's Central High student have changed greatly in the past 79 years. Always striving to serve the student, it is a safe assumption that classes, departments and personnel will continue to adapt to the needs of an ever-changing society and student.
